Nancy R. Buchan (M.A, PhD., University of Pennsylvania, Lauder Institute [East Asian Specialist/Japanese], Wharton School of Business) is an Associate Professor at the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Buchan’s research combines the methodology of experimental economics with theory from psychology, sociology and political science to understand the factors that influence the development of trust and cooperation in cross-cultural relationships. Of most interest is the impact of membership in groups and networks in trust building and how social identity influences how we relate to and cooperate with others. To pursue this research, she has conducted experiments in 14 countries.
Dr. Buchan’s work has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science as well as in the American Economic Review, the American Journal of Sociology, Psychological Science, the Journal of Consumer Research, the Journal of International Business Studies, and others. She has served on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of International Business Studies and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes.
Dr. Buchan has taught international negotiations and cross-cultural communications seminars for Fortune 100, mid-size and entrepreneurial companies as well as and not-for-profit organizations, and for executive education programs in the US, Mexico and Tunisia. She has served as the Director of the International Business Program (#1 for 23 years: U.S. News and World Report) and as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs at the University of South Carolina.
